Slap Yo' Mammy Double IPA (Trinity Brewing)

I believe this beer got its name after someone’s mom brought them a hazy IPA instead of a real IPA. An unforgivable mistake. Of course, I’d never do such a thing. I’d just smash the glass of hazy swill against the wall. Lucky for me (and society), SYM is not a hazy.

This was one of the first beers I had in Colorado Springs in the spring of 2014 when I was running from the law and was looking for a good hideout. It’s a well known fact that the law never comes into Trinity. Or if they do, they belly up to the bar.

Trinity put SYM back on the menu again after a short hiatus, and I believe it’s the first time I’ve had it since that 2014 era (then again, I can’t possibly keep track of every beer that I may or may not have drank…drunk…dranken?).

I have to be honest: it’s a bit flat and the bitterness on the back end is like accidentally getting mosquito repellent in your mouth (if you’ve ever been camping by a lake, you know what I’m talking about). It’s a little sad, since I really enjoyed it ten years ago. Maybe it’s just that my tastes have changed. Note: After I wrote the above description, I was given a sample of SYM on cask (natural carbonation, different conditioning process, yada yada), and it was excellent! So, if you have the option, get this beer on cask and it’ll be your new addiction.

Despite the bitter sips, I still love to come out to Trinity, and not every brew can be a home run. They have plenty of those, like their John Barleycorn Barleywine. Still, Slap Yo’ Mammy is drinkable, and since it’s over 10% ABV, I’ll probably forget about the heavy bitter aftertaste. And when I wash it down with a glass of John Barleycorn, all will be forgiven.
