The Grapefruit Squanchy is my second grapefruit IPA in as many weeks. This one is an imperial from Metric brewing and it’s a great surprise. It doesn’t have the hoppy bite that most grapefruit IPAs have, which can sometimes take away from the grapefruit taste. The grapefruit here is hidden about one layer down from the initial taste, which is smooth creamy on the front end with the mild grapefruit hitting at the end. In fact, the grapefruit shows up initially, then fades into a creamy smoothness, then reappears lingering at the back of the pallet.

The body is lighter than the orange-amber color lets on. It’s certainly not a heavy beer and goes down a little too easy for a 9% ABV beer usually does. There’s no booziness whatsoever, which is another pleasant surprise. I can have a few of these without even thinking about it. But it makes me wonder when that ABV would kick in. This is probably why it’s served in a 10 ounce glass—not good for the wallet (seven bucks a pop), but a good idea liver preservation. After getting down to the bottom of this first glass, the grapefruit is lingering in the best kind of way—not overpowering, but enough to let you know that this is a grapefruit IPA and not an imposter.

About Me

I'm a fan of beer, and so is Vinny (my dog). We love our local breweries and probably spend too much time thinking about their brews. I'm happy to be your unofficial guide to Colorado Springs beer. I hope you enjoy our taproom tales!
