As the name implies, Black Forest Brewing Company is tucked into the woods of Black Forest, which is more of a rural community than a town (in case you’ve never been). I don’t suspect that many people from Colorado Springs even know that there’s a high quality brewery nestled in these woods. If you’ve never had a reason to trek up to Black Forest, now you do.
True to the namesake of the community, the brewery has the feeling of a Bavarian lodge (yes, I know that the Black Forest isn't in Bavaria, but it's close). They offer up some German brats and pretzels to go along with the rotating food trucks. It definitely has a German themed beer list, but also includes American brewery standards. There are bocks, wheat beers, IPAs, Belgians, sours, and stouts. It’s a good rotation that changes up with the season (while keeping a set of flagships year around).
There’s plenty of space in the dual-roomed brewery. There is group-style seating in one area (think Oktoberfest tables) and the standard four-place seating near the bar and fireplace (that fireplace might just be for show). I’m not sure about the dog policy, but in the handful of times I’ve visited, I haven’t seen any. Their llama policy is a mystery too—but I assume they frown upon them as well (their loss).
While it’s off the beaten path of both tourists and city goers, it’s worth a trip up the road (Black Forest road can be reached from Woodman, just east of Powers, or from the north if you live up that way). They opened up a second location near Falcon to spread/gain the wealth. So, if you’re in those areas, then it’s an easy trek. The bottom line is that it’s quality beer that takes its queue from the German tradition and blends it with the American craft brewing scene…the best of both worlds!
